From a hydro-geological viewpoint, the area in which the sulphurous thermo-mineral waters of the Terme del Tufaro spring forth lies in the vicinity of the carbonate mass of Mount Pruno, in the upper valley of the Sele river.
The clear, aqua-green waters of the Tufaro spring, that have an acidic flavour and sulphuric odour are due to their chemical-physical properties effective for mud balneotherapy, balneotherapy and inhalatory treatments.
Thanks to the richness of bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and lithium ions, the waters of Tufaro have outstanding digestive qualities. They are a useful dietetic supplement for osteoporosis, bone and teeth growth and are also effective to tampon lactic acid, the cause of fatigue during athletic activity.
After having been analysed by the Departments of Experimental Pharmacology and of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry of the University of Naples, the waters of the Terme del Tufaro have been classified as hypothermal, calcic bicarbonate, magnesic, sulphurous.
